Sony’s handheld XDCAM EX camcorder will likely be the company’s first professional camcorder that shoots to solid-state memory. Sony says it’s signed a memo of understanding with SanDisk to create 16GB cards that will fit into standard PC Express slots (the successor to PCMCIA). The camera, which will have two of these slots, will shoot MPEG-2-based 1080i and 720p with
1/2in. sensors at multiple frame rates. Does this mean that Sony is moving away from optical disc media? It’s way too early to tell, but to find clues the industry will be watching the development of this camcorder.
